Maybe up on the train tracks or a skyscraper. They have to be, in one of the alleys, or Windows. Why did I stop doing those? Because someone is watching me do them. Why? I was enjoying those big battles with NPCs. Why is it so empty? Because I didn't spawn anyone. And yet all I can hear are the sounds of my footsteps. I can't take it, it's so quiet and so loud at the same time, there's so much ambience and yet it's also so still, distant police cars, planes flying overhead. Why am I so afraid to turn around? This is a single player game, I know for 100% certain I am alone. I am completely alone and I don't like it. Why does every map have such active ambiance? I can hear people talking and cars moving and trains, but there is literally no one here. Try and ignore it I'm supposed to be having fun.ġ hour in. For some reason I cannot give 100% of my attention to whatever I'm trying to do, there's this weird sort of tickling at the back of my mind that something somewhere isn't quite right.

Let's spawn a shit tonne of NPCs and have epic scale battlesĤ5 mins in. Boot up GM Bigcity, that map is an old favourite of mine and it'll be fun to mess around with some mods.ģ0 minutes in, I look over my shoulder but I have zero idea why I did that. I know this is an old comment, but the scary factor very slowly creeps up for me, like a pan on a low heat.ġ0 minutes in, I have just reinstalled Gmod trying to remember why I stopped playing before. Maybe that's even why the experimental first Portal was made so unsettling, as they wanted it to appeal to the widest audience and truly resonate. They know people love to be creeped out, it's addictive. Interesting to think about how this effected the industry when Source was at it's prime.ĭon't think that Valve didn't embrace this though, the Steam icon being from within universe and the creepy 'ol Valve intro are all other elements where they even use this atmosphere in their corporate branding! creepy.īut at the same time I also think the shading and lighting models helped to achieve this industrial coldness in HL2, and were probably developed alongside Source to achieve this very effect. The art design takes on these tones and context as much as anything else, so wherever these assets are used it certainly feels at least a little. HL2 is actually pretty dark if you take in what is actually going on, and the early development versions even more so. Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.I totally get what you mean here and it could be from many things, including the reuse of Half-Life 2 assets in most source games. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides.

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. But if you want to do more, we have the means. If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions.

You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day. You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. We give you the tools and leave you to play. There aren't any predefined aims or goals.
